A RECENT REVIVAL
Italian first capital city, when Italy became a unified nation just 157 years ago, Turin has always been a respected economic and political centre but also, by some means, a slightly forgotten or, at least, unjustly underestimated destination for tourists.
This regrettable and undeserved status has completely changed over the years. Turin is no longer perceived as a grey, foggy yet strategic metropolis of the national heavy industry. It remains, of course, the emblematic hub of pivotal Italian industries (ex.: automobile sector), but it is now also perceived as a beauty in itself, a place to discover and love, with wide eyes and heart!
A CLASSICAL GEM
Museums, iconic art galleries, theatres, opera houses and well-designed squares framed by elegant ancient palaces are increasingly loved by visitors from Italy and all around the world.
It represents, somehow, the long-awaited reward for this unique Neo-classical gem, capital city of the prosperous Piedmont region.
Mainly located on the western bank of the Po River, Turin is surrounded by enchanting little hills (which have inspired poets and writers of all times), by the western Alpine Arch (which offers amazing slopes for ski lovers) and the Susa Valley.
Its natural surroundings have always been praised and, since 1997, even the invaluable beauty of a part of the historical center of the city has been recognized with its inclusion in the World Heritage List under the name “Residences of the Royal House of Savoy” (the royal family, established in the Savoy region since 1003, and whose members ruled Italy from 1861 until 1946).
Considered the most French-inspired city of Italy, Turin boasts, in fact, architectural treasures ranging from the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Rococo to the Art Nouveau.
It is also important to underline that most of the city’s well-known public squares, elegant gardens and palaces, castles and churches have been conceived between the 16th and the 18th centuries.
Moreover, its matchless museums, such as the “Museo Egizio”, and the “Mole Antonelliana” – a beautiful building of monumental size which has become a distinctive feature of the city and can be visited as well – also explain the reason why Turin has become one of the world’s top tourist destinations and one of the most visited cities in Italy.
