THE CENTRE OF THE WORLD
An exceptional ever-living overlapping of cultures, epochs, styles is the very essence of a capital city which is often considered the historical capital of the world. Cradle of one of the most powerful civilizations of all times, Rome seems to harmoniously co-habit with its past grandeur in a daily nonchalant appreciation of the splendor that inhabits it.
Roman ruins, early Christian places of worship, Renaissance palaces, Baroque churches, early 20th century Modernist buildings….all melodiously stand facing each other in a unique mixture of past and present.
Rome is certainly an open-air museum. Nevertheless, the distinctive feature of this city is its natural capacity to host all this beauty without appearing too sophisticated, too ostentatious, too distant from the present days, from its inhabitants and from all the visitors who choose to discover it.
Thus, Rome seems a living theatre stage hosting mesmerized tourists who have the astounding impression to belong to the city during the whole length of their stay.
And this might probably be the main quality of the “eternal city”, made of piazzas full of Renaissance fountains, marble monuments but also of joyful pavement cafés, noisy trattorie and restaurants offering local specialties.
MAGNIFICENT PALAZZOS AND CHURCHES…
The Tiber river cuts in two the capital with its slow waters, which often acquire a golden shimmer at sunset. On both sides, the imposing presence of the Christian history, culture and architecture enrich every neighborhood with basilicas and churches, which are approximately 900 in total.
St Peter is probably the most famous church of the capital and the largest worldwide. This impressive Renaissance basilica attracts tourists from all over the world for its enormous and perfectly conceived dome, its white colonnades, all the unparalleled masterpieces it hosts, its Vatican museum and Gardens.
THE VERY SYMBOL OF AN ETERNAL DOLCE VITA…
In spite of all this magnificent beauty, Rome is also the symbol of an incomparable lightness of being, of a sweet, unpretentious approach to life made of joy, wittiness and a wise fatalism. All Romans seem to be endowed with this spirit to which, by some means, visitors succumb to. This is what is often referred to as the “Dolce Vita”, namely the capacity to slowly enjoy the pleasures of life….simply a “gelato” or a glass of local wine while completely forgetting the heaviness of everyday life, emotional burdens and responsibilities.
