Located in the heart of the renowned Amalfi Coast, on the Salerno Gulf, and facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, Positano seems a mosaic of colors nestled between the ripples of a rocky enclave.
This unique village which rises up from the edge of the sea is a place whose beauty is certainly unparalleled in the world. Joyful, peaceful and peculiar for its location and for the architecture of its houses, Positano is one of the most sought for summer resorts in Southern Italy.
Attracting thousands of Italian and foreign visitors each year, this little town belongs to a coastline which, since 1997, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A DAYDREAM VISION FOR NOSTALGIC ARTISTS
The famous American novelist John Steinbeck, who won, in 1962, the Nobel Prize in Literature, somehow contributed to the reputation of Positano around the world.
In 1953, after a stay in what was still a poor fishing village, he wrote for the women’s fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar: “Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone”.
Maybe because of these very words, Positano started to become an increasingly loved destination for American and European tourists, enchanted by the natural surroundings, the transparency of the sea waters, the welcoming enthusiasm of its inhabitants and the breathtaking view from the village.
FALL AND RISE OF A FISHING VILLAGE
Positano has known both periods of glory and of poverty. An important harbor in Medieval times, the village kept on growing in the sixteenth and seventeenth century thanks to its strategic position. Then, however, came difficult times and by the mid-nineteenth century, many of Positano’s inhabitants were obliged to leave their so loved land to seek fortune abroad, mostly in America.
All those who left always brought with them the mental vision of their village’s beauties such as the church of Santa Maria Assunta featuring a majolica dome and an ancient Byzantine icon of the black Madonna, and the amazing nearby Saracen towers standing out against a perfectly cobalt sky.
