AN ENCHANTING LITTLE TOWN FULL OF HISTORY

Located in the heart of Tuscany, in the rich Maremma area, about 80 kilometers south-east of the city of Grosseto, Pitigliano rises as a dream-like little town, nestling over a hill of tufa rock. Especially at night, the town seems, to bewildered tourists, a sort of magical theater set, beautifully luminous in the darkness.

Covering an area of approximately 103 square kilometers, inhabited since the Etruscan era, Pitigliano is rich of history and of beautiful churches and monuments that recall it every day.

Brief Etruscan inscriptions, Medieval and Renaissance monuments – such as the church of Santa Maria, the 1545 Orsini Fortress, the well preserved Porta Sovana and the remains of an extraordinary aqueduct – transform Pitigliano in a gem for tourists but also for history passionate scholars.

TUSCANY’S LITTLE JERUSALEM

This little town – surrounded by a prosperous countryside and a generous green valley, and only one hour away from the seacoast – is known worldwide for being “Tuscany’s little Jerusalem”. This is due to the historic presence of a very important, flourishing local Jewish community who has always had good relationships with other inhabitants. During World War II and its terrible persecutions due to the promulgation of the national racial laws, Pitigliano’s Jewish inhabitants have, in fact, often been hidden and saved by local Christian farmers.

A beautiful little synagogue, restored in 1995, in the very heart of the little town, and a cave used by Jews for their Passover matzah bakery, still attract countless tourists.

The Jewish presence decisively influenced local traditions, starting from Pitigliano’s gastronomy. The “Sfratto dei Goym”, for example, a traditional sweet prepared for the first time hundreds of years ago, in the Jewish ghetto, by Jews obliged by authorities to leave their homes, is a delicious treat made with a thin dough and a filling of honey, ground walnuts, nutmeg and orange zest.
