In the beautiful province of Siena, Monteriggioni lies placidly in one of the most gorgeous portions of Tuscan countryside. Often referred to in the Divine Comedy, by its author, this little town is said to have been one of the most loved places by Dante Alighieri.
The great Italian writer was, in fact, particularly mesmerized by the remarkable beauty of the little town’s towers which, still today, form the incredible surrounding wall that encircle Monteriggioni. In his universally famous Comedy, Dante compared these towers to the ring of giants surrounding the Inferno’s abyss.
Monteriggioni’s surrounding circular walls are among the best preserved ones in Italy and the lovely town’s architectural profile is one of the most renowned in the area.
A MEDIEVAL JEWEL
Perched on a little hill, gently dominating the surrounding countryside, Monteriggioni is a medieval walled town, built, in 1214, out of scratch by the inhabitants of Siena, who wanted to create a sort of stronghold in the front line that separated them from the “Florentines”, and their horrendous long war.
Therefore, in spite of its peaceful surroundings, Monteriggioni was born as a defensive fortification, and the very symbol of the constant, cruel violence between the two competing powers, Siena and Florence.
In 1554, in an astonishing armistice, the town’s combatant in charge, Giovannino Zeti, handed over, to the inhabitants’ surprise and dismay, Monteriggioni’s keys to the enemy: the soldiers fighting for the House of Medici.
THE BEST WAY TO ARRIVE TO MONTERIGGIONI…
Monteriggioni’s best asset, further than its beautiful medieval circular walls, is its main square, Piazza Roma, renowned for its plain Romanesque church and elegant Renaissance buildings.
The best way to arrive there is by car, possibly at the wheel of a powerful Maserati Quattroporte or an elegant Mercedes S-Class. This will allow the driver to take advantage of Monteriggioni, of all the unmissable sights around it – such as the Romanesque-Gothic hermitage of San Leonardo al Lago –, and of course of the joy of driving through Tuscany’s unique landscapes.
