A MIRACLE CITY…
The French novelist Marcel Proust – one of the most influential authors of the 20th century, known worldwide for its “In Search of Lost Time” –, was madly in love with Florence.
“And when I thought of Florence, it was like a miracle city embalmed and like a corolla, because it was called the city of lilies and its cathedral, St. Mary of the Flowers.” – he wrote in his novel “Swann’s Way”.
And it is undeniable that for all visitors who discover it, the capital city of the Tuscany region is a living miracle, an extraordinary experience for the mind and the heart.
ARTISTIC TREASURES
Cradle of culture, Florence is, above all, the birthplace of the Renaissance. Called the “Athens of the Middle Ages” for its strategic importance in the political and artistic spheres, the city was the centre of critical, sometimes frightening political disputes. This turbulent period has, nevertheless, given birth to the dominant Medici family that contributed enormously to the artistic and strategic rise of their city. Maybe for this reason, Florence has offered inspiration, strength and infinite possibilities to the most talented artists of all times.
The dome of the magnificent city’s Duomo was conceived by the Renaissance key-figure Filippo Brunelleschi. And the nearby bell-tower (The Campanile) was partly designed by the Italian painter and architect Giotto. Moreover, the city has also seen the rise of local writers and thinkers, appreciated worldwide, such as Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, Giovanni Boccaccio, Niccolò Machiavelli who have described with utmost admiration the beauties and the history of their homeland…
A DELIGHT FOR TOURISTS
Declared in 1982 a World Heritage Site by the Unesco, the whole Historic Centre of Florence is a true delight for all visitors who come to discover (or re-discover) it! The city’s museums and art galleries (the Uffizi Gallery, the Palazzo Pitti etc.) offer unparalleled artistic treasures, such as, for example, “The Granduca Madonna” by one of the greatest painters of the High Renaissance Raphael, and the panel painting “Doni Tondo”, created by the incredible master Michelangelo.
Recently ranked by Forbes as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Florence – another unique Italian open-air museum – incessantly celebrates culture, beauty and the art of living, representing thus a unique immersive experience for its inhabitants and visitors.
