AN UNPARALLELED LANDSCAPE
Located in the heart of the Ampezzo valley, Cortina d’Ampezzo – commonly referred to as simply “Cortina – is beautifully surrounded by the mighty mountain chain of the Dolomites.
The little town, 1224 meters high, is “inhabited” by nature: the Boite river flows directly through it and the massive mountainous “walls” encircling Cortina seem to protect it with their unique colors and coniferous woods.
To the west are the Tofane, the Pomagagnon mountain to the north, the 3000 meters high Cristallo to the northeast, Faloria (which hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics, for the men’s giant slalom) to the east and the famous Cinque Torri (Five towers) to the south.
LOVELY LAKES AND A VALUABLE WILDLIFE
The Cortina’s territory is rich with incredible natural beauties – such as fast flowing alpine rivers, creeks, and serene little lakes, like, for example, the Ghedina lake –, and is inhabited by bears, hares, roe deer (often coming near the town), marmots and also some rare wolves.
Probably for this unparalleled landscape, Cortina has been considered for centuries one of the most beautiful and sought for ski resorts of Italy, and is still a highly regarded resort for all-season top tourism.
AN IMPORTANT CENTRE FOR CRAFTS
“One of Italy’s most famous, fashionable and expensive ski resorts in Italy”, according to the Lonely Planet, Cortina d’Ampezzo offers, in fact, first-class sports facilities for skiing, sledding, hiking, climbing and skating.
Its historic hotels are superb, elegant and offering a perfectly refined service to all guests.
However, Cortina is even more than this! Thanks to the unique skills of local craftsmen and the opening, in 1874, of a State Industrial School by the Austrian Ministry of Commerce (when Cortina was still part of the Austro-Hungarian empire), this stunning Italian resort has become a highly regarded centre for wood, copper, glass and metal work. Therefore, the local handmade products have become famous worldwide, and since the 19th century, have been particularly appreciated by German and British visitors.
