After Milan, Bergamo is the second most visited city in Lombardy. All travelers who have had the opportunity to discover this little, yet amazing old fortified town, immediately understand Bergamo privileged status. This city, especially its ancient, upper part, seems to emerge, like a dream-like vision, in the mist of the plain.

Also referred to as “La Città dei Mille”, meaning “The City of the Thousand”, it is located not far away from the Swiss border and only 40 kilometers from Milan. Bergamo also has the chance of being very near to the Alps and the alpine lakes, such as the Lake of Iseo and the Lake of Como.

A CITY WITH TWO HEARTS

Almost cut in two by an ancient 16^th century Venetian defensive system, with an upper, magically suspended part – the Città Alta –, and a lower part – La Città Bassa –, Bergamo is the symbol of both modernity, with its lower part, and of a faithfully preserved ancient past in the suspended part of the city.

The older heart is a delight for visitors loving history and breathtaking views. Maybe for this reason, the internationally known Italian film director, Luca Guadagnino, has recently chosen Bergamo’s upper city, and the nearby Serio Falls, as the setting of its successfully movie “Call Me by Your Name”.

AN HISTORICAL CENTRE FULL OF TREASURES

Bergamo’s historic buildings, squares, churches….not to mention the city’s restaurants, offering an incredibly tasty local cuisine, represent the main attractions for a relentless flow of all-season tourists.

The Visconti Citadel, built in the mid-14^th century, is as stunning as the “Piazza Vecchia” (the “Old Square”) and the ancient seat of the City’s administration – already used in Medieval times – called the “Palazzo della Ragione”.

Moreover, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, built in 1137, boasts an annexed magnificent little Chapel, the “Cappella Colleoni”, considered a unique example of Renaissance architecture.

The best way to travel to Bergamo is by car, following the A4 Milano-Venezia highway, and possibly at the wheel of a stylish Maserati Ghibli…
