Glorious capital city of the Apulia region, Bari is one of the most important economic and commercial hubs of Southern Italy. With a total population of approximately 1.3 million inhabitants, this city is known for its always summery atmosphere, its incredible gastronomic heritage and, above all, for its pivotal modern harbors and its rich past.
The ancient heart of the city is a delight for all visitors’ eyes. On the capital’s northern part, the old town boasts outstanding churches (ex.: the Saint Nicholas Basilica, built in 1087, Bari’s Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Sabinus of Canosa),theatres and fascinating old buildings.
In the modern part of the city, to the south, tourists can visit the “Murat quarter”, conceived and erected by the courageous and flamboyant Napoleone Bonaparte’s general and brother in law, Joachim Murat. There, a beautiful, long promenade lead walkers to the Adriatic sea.
AN OUSTANDING GASTRONOMIC HERITAGE
Bari is known for its magnificent Mediterranean, transparent light, for its numerous churches but also for its delicious culinary traditions. Many local writers, born in the Apulia’s capital city, have thoroughly described in their books the refinement of Bari’s recipes, the unique flavors of its main dishes, its incredible deserts…offering thus to the city’s gastronomy an international fame.
The main strength of this cuisine is the fact it is mostly based on fresh, local agricultural and sea products (fruits, vegetables, fish, seafood and a very flavorsome olive oil).
Restaurants offer an important variety of home-made pastas, such as, for example, the well-known “orecchiette” (an ear-shaped pasta) and the “cavatelli”, small pasta shells made with a soft semolina dough.
This dough is also used to prepare the famous Bari’s “calzoni”: a stuffed, folded pizza, baked in the oven and usually refilled with anchovies, olives, capers and onions.
Constituted by four different urban segments, Bari can be easily reached by car. Since the weather there is mostly sunny, the best way to drive to the city is at the wheel of a convertible Ferrari 488 Spider.
