The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio anticipates how it could be a zero emission supersport car with cutting-edge technologies.
The Lamborghini wants to accumulate knowledge in view of a possible model battery-powered and not be caught unprepared when the supersports cars will abandon the traditional engines in favor of the electric ones.
Lamborghini Terzo Millennio, a futuristic low coupé, shows in which sectors the company must concentrate its studies to obtain an electron supercar with performance, style and the same behavior on the road of a Lamborghini. The sectors have focused their attention on five aspects: energy storage systems, materials, engine, exterior styling and driving behavior.
To realize the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio, the company has obtained the collaboration of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the most prestigious research universities in the world, whose students of the Faculties of Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering have contributed to the research on systems of storage and on materials. In the first case, according to the Lamborghini, a system able to add the advantages of traditional batteries to those of the supercapacitors: on the one hand the energy density, that is the quantity of energy contained within a certain volume, and from the other hand the high power and great longevity over time. The supercapacitors are batteries that can recharge much faster than normal, but they have the defect of accumulating less energy. Lamborghini already uses them on the Aventador and believes they can prove to be good enough to power a supercar rich in energy.
The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio is also innovative as regards new materials, starting from the carbon fiber for the bodywork with integrated nanofilled surfaces, is able to accumulate small amounts of energy and thus transform the car into a sort of large battery. Lamborghini is also thinking of a technology that can automatically repair damaged carbon fiber, using this material also for the components most exposed to shocks and thus reduce the weight of the car. The engines of the Third Millennium are four, positioned in the wheels, suitable solution to improve weight distribution, enhance the distribution of power and free up the space occupied by the engine.
